Septic Regulations in Missouri

Septic System Ownership in Missouri

Within the state of Missouri, the oversite for septic system ownership is split between two different bodies. First, the DNR approves the method of domestic wastewater treatment in new subdivisions or multifamily construction projects. Once the method is approved, the Department of Health and Senior Services is responsible for issuing the construction permits and overseeing the maintenance of septic systems.

Licensure Requirements for Septic System Contractors

To construct or maintain a sewer system in Missouri, a Construction and Operation of Wastewater Irrigation System Permit is required. When completing the application form, you'll be required to detail the land that will be involved, the certification of contractors and designers, and provide plans.

Installing A New Septic System

There are subtle differences in the requirements and rules depending on the county in which you are based. Therefore, before beginning a septic system project, contact the relevant local Missouri authority for more information on how to get started.

How To File A Complaint

For complaints and concerns about sewage systems or any risk to the environment, residents of Missouri can complete an online form. Once submitted, the forms will be passed on to the relevant regional office for their attention.
