Septic System Ownership in Missouri

Within the state of Missouri, the oversite for septic system ownership is split between two different bodies. First, the DNR approves the method of domestic wastewater treatment in new subdivisions or multifamily construction projects. Once the method is approved, the Department of Health and Senior Services is responsible for issuing the construction permits and overseeing the maintenance of septic systems.

Licensure Requirements for Septic System Contractors


To construct or maintain a sewer system in Missouri, a Construction and Operation of Wastewater Irrigation System Permit is required. When completing the application form, you'll be required to detail the land that will be involved, the certification of contractors and designers, and provide plans.
